Orthodontic Care Can Boost Self-Esteem

To improve the stability, health and function of your teeth, you need orthodontic care. People who are at a higher risk for tooth decay or gum disease have been spared because of timely care; so are people who are exposed to a greater risk of tooth loss due to improper positioning of their teeth.

But those are not the only benefits of orthodontics. Getting timely, comprehensive care can also make you happy. It makes you feel better about how you look and feel about yourself that's according to a spokesperson for the Academy of General Dentistry.

Speaking on the effects of orthodontic care as it boosts self-esteem in patients, James G. Richeson Jr., DDS, FAGD, said, Orthodontics can make people feel better about themselves.

Many patients, prior to orthodontics, smile with their mouth closed, because they are self-conscious about their teeth, Dr. Richeson added, but after orthodontics, they usually smile naturally, showing off their new look.

While general dentistry is aimed at assessing the patient's need for treatment or alternatives, orthodontic care is focused on improving the latter's facial appearance by correcting dental issues like crowded or crooked teeth, incorrectly positioned teeth, overbite or underbite, improper jaw position and other disorders of the jaw joints.

In addition to conventional orthodontic treatments, alternative options are available to stop the need for further therapy. These options include the use of space maintainers to retain the ideal space between teeth and avoid complications arising from its crowding. Another alternative treatment often used for children aged between 8 and 10 is the palatal expander, which spreads and widens the upper arch inside the mouth.
